World Wetlands day at an Eco-School

Ok so we were a bit late, we helped Leliefontein Intermediate School celebrate World Wetlands Day on Thursday 10th

February. The school became an Eco-School last year, obtaining a bronze award at their first attempt. They choose the Nature and Biodiversity theme, they adopted a local wetland and the senior grades spent some time clearing the area of rubbish and alien plant species.

This year they are working towards obtaining the silver award, for this they will need to continue and improve upon their work with the wetland and choose a second theme. Their eco-committee will decide on a theme at their first meeting once new members from staff and learners have been elected.

To celebrate the day this year, Priscilla the People and Conservation Officer at the park, delivered a presentation on the benefits of and threats to wetlands in South Africa. The children were aware of the issues and had no trouble answering the questions in the quiz/game that we played afterwards. The shark team one, it was a close contest with the lions and penguins not far behind.
